The Importance of Door Safety Checks

As a property manager who has automatic doors installed on their premises, it is very important to pay attention to their maintenance. If these automatic doors are not checked on a regular basis, they can end up causing serious injury. For that reason, it is highly recommended that you conduct frequent inspections to ensure door performance and safety is up to standard.

Automatic doors, whether sliding or swinging, are usually found on commercial properties. The owners and managers of these properties shoulder the responsibility of carrying out these safety inspections. If the malfunction of an automatic door causes some injury or loss to the visitors of the commercial property, it can result in costly lawsuits. Bear in mind that managers are required by law to maintain the safety of the premises/commercial purposes that they manage.

How to Inspect Automatic Doors for Safety

Carrying out safety inspections of automatic doors is not a difficult procedure. A few minutes are all that is needed to make sure that the doors installed at your property are completely functional. The following is how safety inspections are carried out.

Automatic sliding door safety checks:
  • Walk toward the door at a normal pace. The door should open when you are about 4 feet from the door.
  • Stand motionless on threshold for at least 10 seconds. The door should not close.
  • Move clear of the area. The door should remain open for at least 1.5 seconds and should close slowly and smoothly.
  • Repeat steps 1 through 3 from other direction if door is used for two way traffic.
  • Inspect the floor area. It should be clean with no loose parts that might cause user to trip or fall. Keep traffic path clear.
  • Inspect door’s overall condition. The appropriate signage should be present.
  • Have door inspected by an AAADM certified inspector at least annually.
Automatic swinging door safety checks:
  • Walk toward the door at a normal pace. The door should open when you are about 4 feet from the door.
  • Stand motionless on threshold for at least 4 seconds. The door should not contact you.
  • Walk into the swing area and stop for 10 seconds. The door should not contact you.
  • Move clear of the area. The door should remain open for at least 1.5 seconds and should close slowly and smoothly. If two-way traffic, move toward swinging side of door. Door should open well before you reach the swing path.
  • Inspect the floor area. It should be clean with no loose parts that might cause user to trip or fall. Keep traffic path clear.
  • Have door inspected by an AAADM certified inspector at least annually.

With these simple precautions you can conveniently ensure that your automatic doors are functioning as designed in terms of operation and safety. Always call an AAADM certified technician if there is any doubt or concern pertaining to your particular entrance condition or operation.
